Boss skipped my promotion to give it to his buddy he hired.. so I found a better job and I'm packing my shit.

So I'm a 42yo Xennial ..( last year of gen X but still too old for pokemon.)

I do a trade... Collision repair.

I'm a body/frame tech, but I really want to paint and fill in when the painter is on vacation.

There are about 4 to 5 body men for every painter in a body shop.

I'm lucky enough to be in a union shop, and it's been quite good for me and my family.. even as dysfunctional as I am I can still pull down some real money with my skills and 20 grand of tools I've bought over the years.

I've been waiting for my boomer painter to retire for 6 years, so I can take his place in the paint dept, and get that good money. It's hard work, but it's what I've wanted to do for 15 years.

So the last 3 managers have told me I'm in.

I specifically told my manager of this when he came in 2 years ago. He said ok.

Our new manager hired a second shift night painter (his buddy).

Turns out our painter is retiring early, next month...

Boss says he already promised the night guy the job!

SAY WHAT BRUH!

I went THAT DAY to another shop and they hired me ON THE SPOT for $6 more an hour, to paint cars... what I've been waiting for. And they're in the same union!

So I went from $22hr to $28hr overnight

Don't tell me I'm fucking bourgeois... I've got 2 kids, a mortgage, and bills... barely treading water... I haven't had a vacation in 2 years and I'm about to flush my vacation time to switch careers.

I'm telling my boss and putting in my 2 weeks on Monday. Good luck finding a new body tech, mf

JA:

If “burning” your vacation days means you’ll lose them as unpaid, perhaps you can milk it.

Tell him you want to immediately use your paid vacation days to think about your future there. Then, while being paid for “vacation”, you can already be working at the other gig … so double pay.
