The Big Finding
A genetic analysis of over a million people identified 1,260 DNA variants linked to the Big Five personality traits (extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism, openness). These same variants also correlate with dozens of life outcomes — mental health, hospital visits, exercise, income, career changes, and where people choose to live.
How the Study Worked
- Data pooled from 46 research groups worldwide (611,000–1.14 million people per trait)
- Scanned ~10 million genetic variants across European and African ancestry groups
- Included a family-based sub-sample (~50,725 people) to rule out shared-upbringing effects
- 824 of the 1,260 variants (65%) were newly discovered links

Genetic effects were consistent across age groups, countries, and whether personality was self-reported or rated by a close friend — but common variants still explain only 4.8%–9.3% of trait differences between people. Environment remains the dominant factor.
What the Genes Predict
Health
- Neuroticism variants → higher risk across nearly all mental health conditions, more hospital time
- Agreeableness variants → lower risk for the same conditions
- Conscientiousness variants → less substance use, more exercise, healthier weight, daytime activity
- Openness variants → more nighttime activity (via wearable tracker data)
Career & Geography
- Openness → higher income, more job switching, movement toward cosmopolitan city neighborhoods
- Conscientiousness → movement toward affluent suburbs
- Researchers suspect a feedback loop: genetic tendencies nudge people toward certain environments, which then reinforce the trait
Debunking "Genetic Matchmaking"
Using UK Biobank and Iceland's deCODE data, researchers found spouses share only 1%–4% genetic similarity in personality traits — far less than the ~37% similarity seen for educational attainment. A separate Icelandic dataset (34,000+ parent-child pairs) confirmed the gene-personality link is 96.2% direct, not just a byproduct of growing up in the same household.
This is population-level science. None of it can predict what any single person will do — there's no "personality gene," and DNA can't be read like a horoscope. But it does suggest personality is more biologically entangled with everyday life than previously assumed.
