Forget T-shaped. The AI era demands X-shaped.

Companies no longer want the classic specialist with a little extra curiosity. They want people who can spike hard in multiple directions, absorb complexity fast, and treat AI as a force multiplier—not a threat.

Shopify COO Jess Hertz nailed it: the old T-shaped model (deep in one area, broad elsewhere) is getting replaced. AI pushes us toward **X-shaped** talent—multiple vectors of real expertise, the ability to jump domains, and the speed to become “a solid 7 out of 10” in a new skill when needed.

Here’s the sharper version of what actually moves the needle right now:

 1. Judgment (the human override)

AI spits out options at scale. Someone still has to decide which ones are worth acting on—especially when money, people, customers, or strategy are on the line.

The star isn’t the person who gets the fastest answer from the model. It’s the one who knows when that answer is garbage.

 2. Communication that creates understanding

Not “good at talking.” The ability to make complex ideas land across functions, levels, and even machines. In an AI-heavy workplace, clarity is leverage. Fuzzy communication becomes pure friction.

 3. Curiosity that asks the right question

AI can answer almost anything. It cannot tell you which question actually matters to the business this quarter. The people who keep winning are the ones who stay relentlessly curious about the real problem underneath the noise.

4. Rapid multi-domain learning

The X-shaped edge: you don’t need to be world-class in five fields. You need the ability to get competent fast, connect dots across domains, and use AI to close the gap. Depth in one area is still valuable—multiple usable spikes are better.

 5. Human-AI collaboration as a core skill

Not “prompt engineering” as a job title. The practical ability to direct AI agents, override them when necessary, design workflows that blend human judgment with machine speed, and keep the system pointed at actual outcomes.

The shift is simple and brutal:

Specialists who only go deep in one lane are becoming easier to replace or augment.

People who can cross lanes, learn on the fly, exercise real judgment, and make AI work for them are the ones companies are quietly fighting over.

Become the intersection point. That’s the X.
