That's part of why the Boston metro area — with its strong career mobility and broad economic opportunity — claimed the top spot on Indeed's new Best Cities for Work ranking. The job-search platform analyzed over 200 US metro areas with populations above 200,000, scoring them across six dimensions: job opportunity, compensation, job quality and security, career mobility and dynamism, work-life flexibility, and economic opportunity.

Puri credited Boston's "all-around balance" — it ranked well in nearly every category, peaking at No. 2 for career mobility and dipping only as low as No. 14 for job opportunity.
The metro's economy spans multiple industries, anchored by healthcare and professional and business services. It's also home to major universities like Harvard, making it attractive for those pursuing academic careers or further education while working.
Boston's hybrid work culture is another draw. According to Indeed, that flexibility helps employers attract "elite talent" and lets workers build a lifestyle that protects personal time without giving up access to high-paying industries or enduring a rigid 9-to-5 office routine. Socially inclined residents will also find plenty to do after hours — the metro ranks No. 10 nationally for restaurant density.
Its weakest metrics? Childcare and housing costs.

Washington, DC: Easy Job-Hopping, Long Commutes
The DC metro delivered a mixed performance. Its top rank for career mobility means switching jobs should be relatively painless, thanks to a wide variety of employers in the region.
However, Indeed's postings tracker shows job opportunities remain below February 2020 levels. BLS data indicates the occupations most concentrated here relative to the national average are political scientists, economists, and astronomers.
Commuting is one of its weak spots (No. 25 for average commute time), but the metro excels elsewhere: No. 2 for transportation cost and No. 9 for walkability. As Indeed put it, "You can easily live car-free, saving thousands of dollars annually on gas, parking, and maintenance."

Burlington, Vermont: A Stable, Locally Rooted Market
Burlington ranked third overall, standing out most for job opportunity — its postings tracker shows openings above pre-pandemic levels. Healthcare workers may find particular promise there, with the University of Vermont Medical Center employing thousands. It's also a strong pick for those who prefer working in person rather than remotely.
"While Burlington sits at #22 for remote/hybrid job shares, this actually highlights a unique benefit: a highly stable, locally rooted job market," Indeed said. "Instead of transient 'laptop class' roles that can be outsourced anywhere, Burlington offers deeply embedded, stable careers."
Transportation costs and access to career and skills training were among its weakest metrics.
