While young workers continue to face headwinds in the broader job market, a distinct subset of the tech sector is offering them a lucrative exception: artificial intelligence.
A new study published Tuesday by LinkedIn highlights the top 12 fastest-growing AI roles, analyzing the demographics, education, and age of recent hires. The report defines these positions as “AI engineering and technology-building roles,” and the findings reveal a striking trend: young professionals are disproportionately capturing these high-value opportunities.
A Bright Spot in a Tough Job Market
“There is a prevailing narrative in the labor market right now that it’s very difficult to get a job if you’re Gen Z,” notes Kory Kantenga, Head of Economics, Americas, at LinkedIn. “That narrative isn’t wrong.”
Indeed, broader economic data underscores this challenge. As of June, the unemployment rate for young workers aged 22 to 27 stood at 7.2%, and 5.7% for recent college graduates in that same age bracket, compared to a 4.1% national average, according to the U.S. Census Bureau and Bureau of Labor Statistics.
However, the LinkedIn report reveals that young workers are robustly capitalizing on the expanding AI labor market. Gen Z professionals now account for more than two-thirds of new hires in two highly sought-after individual contributor roles: forward-deployed engineer (median salary: $199,000) and AI engineer (median salary: $166,000). Meanwhile, Millennials dominate the leadership pipeline, making up 60% of new hires for "Head of AI" positions, which command a median pay of $236,000.
The demand is surging. While LinkedIn declined to share absolute figures, a company representative noted that AI job postings on the platform grew by 14% between 2023 and 2024, followed by a staggering 156% jump between 2024 and 2025.
The Education Premium and the Inequality Risk
This boom is translating into significant financial rewards. According to the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, the median annual salary for workers aged 25 to 34 was $60,320 in Q2 2026, while those aged 35 to 44 earned a median of $74,672. By contrast, LinkedIn’s analysis of job posting data shows the median salary for a typical AI role is $177,000—more than double the $80,000 median for non-AI roles.
“There’s a lot of capital flowing into AI today, and to attract top talent, companies have had to significantly increase their compensation offers,” Kantenga explains.
This premium is largely driven by educational requirements. The study found that 91% of workers in AI roles hold a bachelor’s degree or higher, with educational attainment scaling alongside seniority. Nearly half of all "Head of AI" hires possess a graduate degree, and 20% hold a doctorate.
While Kantenga predicts this demand will continue to drive up wages for highly educated professionals with relevant degrees, he warns it could also exacerbate economic divides. If workers without higher education or specific technical degrees are systematically shut out of these high-paying occupations, the AI boom risks widening the existing pay gap.
The Persistent Gender Gap
Despite the overall growth, women are not reaping the same benefits from the AI job market. In 2025, women accounted for just 26% of new hires in AI roles, compared to a 50% share in non-AI occupations.
The disparity is even more pronounced at the top. Women make up only:
* 20% of hires for Head of AI roles
* 26% of hires for Director of AI roles
* 18% of hires for Member of Technical Staff (MOTS) roles
These three positions represent some of the highest-paying jobs in the sector. The only AI role where women are hired at parity with men is "data annotator," which is also the lowest-paying occupation on LinkedIn’s list, with a median salary of $51,000. Furthermore, a February 2025 study by leadership advisory firm Russell Reynolds found that women hold just 10% of CEO and top tech roles at AI organizations.
In short, Kantenga observes, “women are less well-represented at every rung of seniority” within AI firms.
How to Break Into the AI Field
For students and young professionals aiming to enter the field, Kantenga’s primary recommendation remains foundational: pursue a computer science degree.
Although recent computer science graduates have faced a challenging job market—with unemployment for this group rising to 7% in 2024, per the Federal Reserve Bank of New York—the long-term payoff remains strong. A report from the National Association of Colleges and Employers projects that computer science majors will command the highest starting salary of all majors among the Class of 2026, at $81,535.
Beyond formal education, practical application is key. “Make sure you have experience working with data,” Kantenga advises. A theoretical background in data engineering is no longer sufficient; employers demand candidates who know how to prepare, manage, and leverage data effectively. For those with limited professional experience, he recommends building a portfolio through AI side projects to demonstrate passion and tangible skills.
A Mixed Outlook for the Future
Not all young workers are viewing this technological shift with unbridled optimism. Kantenga acknowledges a deep ambivalence among the younger demographic regarding AI’s impact on their futures.
“For some, it’s a highly positive career opportunity,” he says. “For others, there is genuine anxiety: *Is this technology going to replace me?*.”
As the AI industry continues its rapid expansion, bridging the gender gap, ensuring equitable access to training, and balancing automation with job creation will remain critical challenges for the broader labor market.
