5 Ways to Get Promoted Before AI Makes Your Job Redundant

You’re solid at your job. Reviews confirm it. You hit targets, clients request you by name, and nothing on your job description slips. Then the promotion goes to someone with less experience. You’ve checked their LinkedIn twice trying to figure out the difference.

I founded a social media agency at 22 and sold it in 2021. I hired more than 30 social media managers and interviewed hundreds. They arrived with nearly identical resumes and the same job description. Within a year, some made themselves irreplaceable. The rest were still waiting to be told what to do.

AI targets the work that is easy to describe. If everything you do fits neatly inside a job description, software can attempt it. Here are five ways to think bigger at work.

 1. Do the job above yours before anyone offers it

Watch the person one level up and note what fills their days. Then start handling the parts no one has claimed—the dreaded report, the decision that keeps getting pushed to next week. You become the obvious choice for promotion when you are already performing the role beyond your current title.

Then ask. The request carries more weight when you can point to the work you have already taken on. Book the conversation. State the title you want and list what you have absorbed. Do the bigger job without asking for the title, and you risk keeping the bigger job at the old salary.

 2. Get on top of how your company makes money

Learn what the company charges and what it costs to deliver for a client. If the numbers exist, someone in finance (or sales or marketing) will usually share them if you ask. The strongest people I hired understood the business model. They suggested upsells and contract extensions without being asked.

Bring that knowledge into your next review: what you generated, what you saved, what you extended. Asking for more money without showing how you create value leaves the decision dependent on how much your manager likes you. Give them the commercial case instead.

 3. Learn AI and do the work of three people

Someone doing your job elsewhere has already been replaced by software. Do not let it be you. Open the tools this week and apply them to the largest share of your work—start with reporting and first drafts. Produce the output of three people from one desk.

Document the process. Show that the task you inherited now takes a fraction of the time. Put your name on the new method and share it with your manager and the neighboring team. Mastering the tools lets you move faster than your job description updates. Let others be the ones replaced by AI.

 4. Go after bigger clients than the ones you were given

You manage a list of clients handed to you when you joined. Write down your dream clients—ten names is enough. The logos that would change how people see the company. Then find where those people spend time and connect with them on LinkedIn.

Put yourself in the rooms they occupy, including the conference no one from your team bothers attending. Bring them on board before anyone gives you the formal remit. One client larger than anything currently on your list shifts what people believe you can handle.

 5. Visualize the role you want and tell your manager

Describe the role you want inside the company: what you own, what a typical day looks like from start to finish, and what you hand off permanently. Visualize the top of the mountain, then reverse-engineer how to get there. Clarify why that role is the one you want.

Share it with your manager. Name the role and the timeline, then ask what would need to be true. Build an internal scorecard against the role you described and review yourself against it every quarter. A manager who knows where you are headed begins giving you the work that moves you there.

Your job survives AI when you think bigger

The role above yours is either being done poorly or not being done at all. Either way, a gap exists. You are allowed to step into it before anyone invites you. Start with the part of the role no one wants. Do it well enough that removing you would be costly, then state what you want next. Make yours the job that expanded while everyone else defended the size they were given. No one is coming to spot your potential.
