AI Is Eliminating Entry-Level Jobs — Education Must Step In to Fill the Gap


As artificial intelligence automates routine tasks, entry-level positions are disappearing. Job postings for these roles have dropped by 35% since 2023, leaving recent graduates with fewer opportunities to gain the real-world experience employers demand. The traditional pathway into the workforce is breaking down, and colleges and universities need to rethink how they prepare students for careers.

For decades, entry-level jobs served as more than just a first paycheck. They were where new graduates learned workplace norms, practiced professional skills, contributed to real outcomes, and built confidence. AI’s ability to handle many of these foundational tasks is weakening the business case for companies to hire and train early-career talent. As a result, the shared responsibility model between employers and educators is collapsing.


Institutions can no longer rely on employers to provide that critical first one to two years of professional development. Instead, colleges and universities must take the lead in creating structured, job-like experiences within the educational journey itself.


Bring Real-World Application into the Classroom


The most effective shift starts with curriculum design. Rather than treating theory and practice as separate, institutions should integrate hands-on learning directly into coursework. 


Advances in simulation software, virtual reality (VR), and augmented reality (AR) now make it possible for students to practice technical skills, client interactions, project management, and decision-making in realistic settings — whether in engineering, healthcare, business, or the creative fields. This approach helps students move beyond conceptual understanding to applied competence.


Build a Continuous Pipeline of Experience


Beyond the classroom, institutions should expand structured experiential learning models:


- **Co-op and work-integrated learning programs**: These allow students to alternate between academic terms and paid or credit-bearing work placements, creating a steady rhythm of theory and practice.

- **Externships**: Shorter, flexible, project-based opportunities that let students shadow professionals, tackle real challenges, and explore career paths without the intense competition of traditional internships.


Internship applications are now nearly twice as competitive as they were a year ago, with 56% of students unable to secure one. By scaling co-ops and externships, schools can dramatically increase access to meaningful experience.


Institutions that intentionally weave these experiences throughout a student’s time on campus will graduate professionals who are immediately productive and confident. The responsibility extends beyond commencement. In a rapidly changing job market, early-career skill development remains essential. Educational institutions can continue supporting alumni through targeted upskilling programs, mentorship networks, and partnerships that provide ongoing applied learning opportunities.

Employers who actively participate in these experiential programs gain significant advantages: a stronger talent pipeline, faster onboarding, better performance from day one, and access to more diverse candidates. While fewer companies may feel obligated to invest in entry-level training in the AI era, those who do partner strategically with education will be better positioned for long-term success.


The Path Forward


AI is reshaping entry-level work and fracturing the old system for building experience. If we fail to redesign how young professionals gain skills and workplace fluency, an entire generation risks being locked out of opportunity.


The solution lies in education taking a more proactive role — embedding real-world application deeply into the student experience, from the first year through post-graduation support.
