My employer rescinded my signed contract just days before my start date, after I already moved across the country for the job. Do I have any options?

The job market is rough—but imagine finally landing the role, moving your life across the country, and then getting an email days before your start date: offer rescinded.

Is that legal? Often, yes. But not always consequence-free.

Take this scenario: after years in the same job, you accept a new role, quit, relocate, sign a lease, only to have the employer pull the plug at the last minute due to a hiring freeze. You’re left with no job, no safety net, and a pile of expenses.

In most U.S. states, employment is “at will,” meaning offers can typically be withdrawn for almost any non-illegal reason. A job offer alone usually isn’t a binding contract.

But there are exceptions—and they matter.

If an employer knowingly misled you to get you to relocate, that can cross a legal line. Some states, like California, have specific laws against inducing someone to move under false pretenses. Others recognize a broader doctrine called promissory estoppel—a principle that can make a promise legally enforceable if you relied on it and suffered harm.

To have a viable claim, you generally need to show:

  • The employer made a clear job offer

  • You reasonably relied on it (quit your job, moved, spent money)

  • You suffered financial damage as a result

If those boxes are checked, you may have grounds to recover losses.

What should you do if this happens?

Start by documenting everything—emails, offer letters, and any written explanation for the withdrawal. Then assess the damage: moving costs, lost wages, deposits, all of it. If possible, try to stabilize your situation quickly (even reaching back to your previous employer).

Most importantly, talk to an employment attorney. These cases are nuanced, state-specific, and not always easy to prove—but if you’ve taken a major financial hit, it’s worth a serious look.

Bottom line: employers can rescind offers—but if you’ve rearranged your entire life based on their promise, they may not get to walk away clean.
