The next phase of the corporate AI boom: measuring which employees actually understand it



CEOs love a good AI talking point. Over the past 90 days alone, executives have dropped the phrase "early AI adopters" at least 60 times across earnings calls, conference stages, and prepared remarks, according to business intelligence platform AlphaSense. The message is always the same: we're moving fast, we're ahead of the curve, we're winning the AI race.

But here's the uncomfortable question nobody's asking on those calls: Does your workforce actually understand what AI is?

A growing number of major corporations are starting to find out — and the answers are humbling.

The Gap Between Hype and Comprehension

Workera, a business skills intelligence platform now serving roughly 10% of the Fortune 500, has been running adaptive AI assessments across large organizations. What they found challenges the confidence executives project on stage.

Only 11% of employees accurately estimate their own AI proficiency before taking an assessment. Meanwhile, 32% overestimate their skills — and a surprising 56% actually underestimate them. The picture that emerges isn't of a workforce that's confidently AI-ready. It's a workforce that largely doesn't know what it doesn't know.

"If you can measure people fairly accurately, you can actually do a lot of things better," said Kian Katanforoosh, Workera's CEO and founder. "You can hire better and more meritocratically. You can match people to the right project. You can determine what people should learn to maximize their impact."

What "AI Fluency" Actually Means

Workera's framework pushes well past the ability to write a ChatGPT prompt. It's organized around three pillars: AI fundamentals, generative AI, and responsible AI.

On the fundamentals side, employees are expected to differentiate between machine learning, deep learning, and generative AI — and to describe what an AI agent actually does (a concept that remains fuzzy for many, even inside tech companies).

Generative AI fluency means being able to craft effective prompts, spot hallucinations in AI-generated responses, and understand at a basic level how large language models are trained.

Then there's responsible AI — perhaps the most overlooked dimension. Workera's framework asks employees to distinguish between algorithmic, data, and human biases in AI systems, and to understand common privacy risks. It's the kind of literacy that rarely makes the earnings call script, but matters enormously when AI is embedded in real decisions.

From Access to Accountability

For the past decade, the dominant goal in tech and education was expanding access — getting more people in front of powerful tools. The next phase looks different.

"The last decade in education was about access," Katanforoosh said. "The next decade is about measurement."

That shift matters for companies navigating AI adoption. Knowing that your organization uses AI is very different from knowing that your organization understands it. The former is easy to announce. The latter takes work to build — and an honest assessment to prove.

The executives hyping adoption rates aren't necessarily wrong. But the companies that will actually win the AI race are the ones pairing those announcements with a harder, more internal question: who here really knows what they're doing?
