A recent study by CoworkingCafe identified the top 20 small U.S. cities (with populations under 250,000) that offer strong career opportunities alongside a high quality of life. The analysis evaluated 298 cities using 19 metrics across four key categories: salary and income, job market strength, quality of life and amenities, and industry presence.
Importantly, the rankings prioritized meaningful career indicators—such as wage growth and unemployment rates—over simple affordability. The goal was to highlight cities where professionals can grow, not just save.
Top Performer: Alpharetta, Georgia
Alpharetta ranked first overall, thanks to a combination of advantages: a high density of businesses, diverse job opportunities in tech and finance, strong broadband infrastructure, accessible healthcare, and relatively easy commutes. Its proximity to Atlanta also plays a major role, offering access to a larger economic ecosystem.
Other Standout Cities
Second on the list is South Jordan, Utah, a fast-growing suburb of Salt Lake City where wages have surged by 72% since 2019.
Three California tech hubs—Mountain View, Santa Clara, and Palo Alto—also made the top five. While these cities come with higher living costs, they offer substantial salaries, with median incomes around $200,000. For tech professionals, the earning potential continues to offset the expense.
Who’s Moving?
According to the study’s author, the typical movers are early-career professionals over 25 with college degrees and clear career goals. For them, relocating isn’t about slowing down—it’s about optimizing both lifestyle and income potential.
