'Job huggers' hold on for dear life

The job-hopping pendulum has swung so far, it feels more like a guillotine – say hello to "job hugging." Whereas three years ago, workers had the power to hunt for employment aggressively, now they're clinging to their jobs. This stagnation in the labor market, which is already beset by the lowest non-COVID hiring rates in a decade, signals worrisome economic trends. Workers skittish about the state of their finances are sitting tight, limiting opportunities for broader movement.

Are we really in a “Big Stay” or just witnessing a wave of Job Hugging?

Economists say workers are sticking with their roles longer, the opposite of the Great Resignation. But the reality may be more complex.

 A recent LinkedIn poll showed:

🔸Only 14% are happy in their roles
🔸20% are open to new opportunities
🔸66% are actively looking

That doesn’t sound like people loving their jobs, more like they’re hugging them for security.

Korn Ferry describes this as “job hugging”: staying put not out of passion, but because risk feels greater than reward.

The risks?

❌Quiet quitting 2.0 – presenteeism without performance
❌Pent-up attrition – a wave of exits when confidence returns
❌Innovation slowdown – caution rarely drives transformation
