22 new careers AI could create

A.I. and DESIGN. This essay in the NY Times posits that AI will lead to the application of design knowledge into new fields. Under the subheading of "Taste," the author lists roles that I find alluring as a design history teacher who has spent years contextualizing style within socio-technological frameworks.

"And there are other design qualifiers that will likely come into vogue. I might, for example, not be a writer but an article designer. Story designer might become a more popular title in film and TV. We could see a lot more world designers in everything from marketing — where a person fabricates an entire universe, complete with fictional characters and locations, which then feeds all the images and videos of a campaign — to video games. Many of these roles will be more focused on style than on technical execution."

As artificial intelligence reshapes work and incites worry over impending job loss, The New York Times Magazine explores its potential for job creation. There are three areas where humans will remain essential, according to Robert Capps: trust, integration, and taste. He comes up with 22 theoretical jobs — for example, drug-compliance optimizer or A.I. personality director — where humans will be called on to take responsibility for AI tools' vast output, connect AI with real-world business needs, or guide the stylistic and strategic direction of the AI future.

What types of jobs will be sought after?

💼 Trainers, says the WEF, “are the people developing AI: engineers and scientists working on the large language models (LLMs) on which generative AI tools such as ChatGPT depend.” Additionally, AI development involves more than just programmers; demand engineers, predicts the WEF’s Jobs of Tomorrow 2024 report.

💼 Explainers - Trainers work behind the scenes while explainers interact with users to help them understand and use AI. They design interfaces for smooth interactions and can be considered "user experience (UX) designers," says the Forum.

💼 Sustainers will ensure optimal AI use by focusing on three functions: (1) Content creators will exercise prompt engineering, (2) Data curators will ensure LLMs receive high-quality data, and (3) Ethics and governance specialists will ensure LLMs operate without bias, harm, or unethical behavior, rigorously testing before public release. This may lead to the emergence of AI safety and regulatory officers.

This is what we received from the WEF in January 2024. When reassessed today, it proves to be quite insightful, providing us with strong guidance for the decisions we have no choice but to make.
