Career Expert: New Grads Waste Time Obsessing Over the Wrong Thing—Here’s What to Focus on Instead

As 2025 college graduates enter the job market, many fixate on landing the "perfect" job, a worry that career experts say is misguided. Suzy Welch, a career coach and NYU Stern professor, argues this obsession wastes time and energy. With 60% of entry-level roles offering limited growth, chasing an ideal position often leads to disappointment.
Instead, Welch advises focusing on building transferable skills. New grads should prioritize roles that teach in-demand skills like data analysis, project management, or communication, which open doors to future opportunities. For example, a marketing assistant role might offer hands-on experience with analytics tools, valued across industries.
Networking is also key. Graduates should connect with mentors and peers, as 70% of jobs are found through referrals. By emphasizing skill-building and relationships over perfectionism, new grads can set themselves up for long-term success in a competitive market.
