Workplace expert Nick Bloom says CHROs are the rising stars of the C-suite after ‘a huge increase in HR importance’

HR executives have traditionally operated in the background of corporate America, managing various aspects of employee relations. However, the role of Chief Human Resources Officers (CHROs) is rapidly evolving, as highlighted by Stanford economist Nick Bloom. According to Bloom, the presence and significance of HR leaders in the top echelons of corporate management are on a pronounced upswing.

Rise of CHROs in the C-Suite

1. Historical Perspective: A mere 0.5% of CHROs were among the top five highest-paid executives in 1992, compared to a substantial 13% in 2022. This indicates a significant shift in the corporate landscape, signifying the ascendancy of HR executives.

2. Compensation Trends: The compensation ratio for CHROs relative to other executives, excluding the CEO, has surged from about 40% in 1992 to approximately 70% in 2022. Moreover, the wage gap between CEOs and other C-suite executives has halved, with HR leaders experiencing an augmentation in salaries, bonuses, and stocks.

3. Industry Disparities: There exists a discrepancy in the elevation of HR prominence across various industries. While leisure and hospitality witness a high representation of HR executives in the top tier, sectors like information services and finance demonstrate lower percentages. This has prompted consideration of the criticality of HR functions in different business landscapes.

4. Evolving Roles: The nomenclature has evolved from traditional titles such as "HR director" to more executive designations like CHRO and CPO (Chief People Officer). Besides traditional responsibilities, HR leaders are now tasked with overseeing diverse functions including Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), real estate, and remote work arrangements, signaling a broader scope of responsibilities.

Prospects for the Future

5. Cross-Functional Expertise: The evolving landscape of HR necessitates an increasingly cross-functional and strategic approach. This transformation is positioning HR leaders for greater influence and substantial pay increases in the foreseeable future.

6. Continued Growth: Bloom predicts an ongoing trajectory of HR ascendancy, anticipating its amplification for at least the next five years. This projection underscores the enduring significance of HR executives in the corporate arena.
