For A Healthier Mindspace You Need A Healthy Workspace

How we feel about work matters because it takes up most of our waking hours, affecting our mood more often than not.

We spend most of our days working, whether from an office, a shared space, or from home.

When you look at your workspace, or even just think about it, do you feel overwhelmed? Or anxious? Or bored? Imagine being able to feel a sense of calm and organization instead.

There may not be much we can control at work but we can at least control the space we work from.

I’ve put together a list of tips for creating a healthy workspace for yourself.

Some are easily applicable and others may be impossible if you work in a shared space. Nonetheless, there is always something you can do to make your space a little ‘healthier’.

When we feel relaxed and focused, we become more productive which boosts both our mood and our confidence.

Tips for a healthier, happier workspace:

  • Try to sit by a window, exposure to natural sunlight can boost your mood
  • If you are working from home or a shared space, find a quiet corner that doesn’t have many distractions
  • Declutter your space to declutter your mind
  • Put your phone away, on silent or on DND
  • Use web.whatsapp.com if you need Whatsapp for work to ensure you don’t get distracted by social media
  • Print out your schedule (daily, weekly, monthly) and to-do list
  • Schedule in breaks
  • Add plants to your desk to add some life to it, read why here
  • Add photos of friends, family, or pets so your desk feels more personal
  • Give your desk a bit of character by adding souvenirs or memorabilia
  • Avoid eating at your desk so you can feel like you’re truly on a break
  • Add some colors to your space, colors that make you happy
  • Invest in noise-canceling headsets
  • Use a good office chair or make sure you are sitting in an ergonomically correct position (read here to find out how)
  • Stand up when you are tired of sitting
  • Stock up on healthy snacks so you don’t end up over-indulging

Not everything is out of our control, we just need to learn how to make the best of what we’ve been dealt

If you can think of any other tips for creating a healthier workspace, please feel free to share them!
