Trends in diversity, equity & inclusion for HR

As we get further into 2022, recruiting and retaining diverse employees remains important. So diversity, equity, and inclusion trends are top of mind.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that the job market will grow from 153.5 million to 165.4 million over the next decade, partly as a result of industries such as healthcare and social assistance, which will grow as the world recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic. Another 46% of full-time employed U.S. adults are actively searching for or considering a new job, according to CNBC.com.

However, one thing companies will all be fighting for is hiring diverse employees and figuring out how to retain them once they are through the door. Here are some anticipated trends for 2022 and ways companies can create an inclusive workplace for employees.

Implement unconscious bias training

Seventy-one percent of employees say they are able to be authentic at work, leading them to feel more confident, more engaged, and generally happier, according to Hive.com. Unfortunately, minority groups are more likely to experience bias, resulting in the fear of being their true selves at the expense of their careers.

Although the majority of employees feel comfortable showing up as themselves, minority groups feel unsupported and discouraged at work due to pervasive unconscious bias. In order to do their best work and to feel like their best selves, employees need to feel that their differences are encouraged and supported by workplace leaders. Implementing unconscious bias training can help ensure that all employees receive proper training to treat colleagues with dignity and respect.

Reduce the stigma of mental health challenges

Throughout the pandemic, the mental health of employees has been a major concern. Many employees have felt isolated or socially limited, leading to a rise in anxiety and depression, according to USA Today.

Employers began focusing on implementing initiatives to normalize struggles with mental health challenges in the workplace. This should continue through 2022 and beyond. Companies are discovering new ways to support their employees while providing free therapy and counseling resources – both virtual and in person. Prioritizing the mental health and well-being of employees helps lead to greater productivity and longevity.

Offer flexibility in your work environment

2021 brought many changes to the workplace and 2022 will likely bring new ones. Many companies are providing hybrid or fully remote work options to employees, according to BBC.com. This allows flexibility for employees based on their health concerns and addresses work-life balance. Companies will embrace a continued virtual work environment and will offer new and improved ways to stay connected virtually. They will support young professionals, working parents and guardians, caretakers, and populations who need flexibility.

The National Diversity Council hopes to cultivate a nationwide network of affiliated councils to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion by transforming our workplaces and communities into inclusive environments where individuals are valued for their talents and empowered to reach their fullest potential.
