My job does not require 8 hours a day, 5 days a week.

I am a secretary for one of the departments in the state prison that I work at. My job is ridiculously uneventful and very slow. I don't work directly with inmates so I don't have to do much. The actual work I can get done in 2 hours, max 3 hours. The other 6 hours I basically bullshit around and reread the same emails or surf the web looking up random shit. I seriously don't know why I can't telework or why we can't start to question authority on why we need to waste time doing diddly squat for 8 hours. All my managers leave at 330-4pm. So basically I'm just literally fiddling around my desk for the last hour of the day. It's fucking ridiculous. I'm not complaining about full-time work but I commute 30 minutes back and forth to just sit around and wait to answer calls or send an email. I don't see why I can't telework. From what I hear, the warden at my job doesn't like employees teleworking.

What would you do in this situation? I just started this job and I honestly don't think I like it as much as I thought I would.

JA:

I know someone who approached their boss in a similar situation. Boss’s answer was something along the lines of ‘if you can do the job in 3-4 hours then there is no need to pay you full time. Careful what you ask for.
