Spain jobless level hits 15.3% in second quarter

Spain's unemployment rate rose in the second quarter of the year, reflecting the negative impact on the labor market of lockdown measures to contain the coronavirus pandemic.
The country's unemployment rate rose to 15.33% in the quarter from 14.41% in the first quarter of 2020, Spanish statistics office INE said Tuesday. Jobless claims rose by 55,000 in the second quarter.
Tens of thousands of firms in Spain have signed up for a temporary program by which the government partially subsidizes workers' wages to avoid job losses. These workers aren't included in the unemployment figures.
Employment registered a decrease of more than one million people in the second quarter, reaching a total of 18.6 million employed. Employment declined across all sectors, INE said.
