Work-from-anywhere is still very much alive in 2026 — and the salaries are serious

If the return-to-office push has left you calculating how much of your paycheck is disappearing into gas, parking, dry cleaning, and 90 minutes of soul-crushing commute every day, you’re not alone. The average U.S. office worker is now spending roughly $6,700 a year just to show up — money that never appears in any job offer letter.

The good news? Fully remote, location-independent roles that pay six figures (and higher) are still being filled right now. Below are the seven roles FlexJobs data shows companies have been hiring for most aggressively this year, ranked by average pay. I’m treating this as a career briefing, not a listicle — so I’ll tell you who these roles actually suit and how to position yourself.

 1. Senior Sales Manager — ~$165,000

This is the highest-paying work-from-anywhere role on the list for a reason. You own strategy, major accounts, and revenue targets across distributed teams and clients.

**You’re a strong fit if:** you already think commercially, can negotiate without being in the same room, and can build trust over Zoom and email.

**How to stand out:** Lead with quantified wins (“closed $X in new ARR while fully remote”) and prove you can run a sales process asynchronously.

 2. Software Engineer — ~$139,000

Still one of the most consistently remote-friendly and high-demand roles across almost every industry. The work increasingly involves AI coding tools, but the judgment, architecture, and testing still require real engineering skill.

**You’re a strong fit if:** you can ship clean code, collaborate in async environments (PRs, documentation, Slack), and stay current with AI-assisted development.

**How to stand out:** Public GitHub activity, clear technical writing, and evidence you can own features end-to-end without daily stand-ups.

 3. Marketing Manager — ~$122,000

This covers everything from brand and content to paid acquisition, email, and partnerships. Sub-specialties (email, PPC, social) are especially common in remote setups.

**You’re a strong fit if:** you turn attention into revenue and can prove it with numbers.

**How to stand out:** Case studies that show ROI, not just “grew Instagram followers.” Remote marketing managers who can set strategy and still execute (or manage freelancers) win these roles.

 4. Senior Project Manager — ~$117,000

Every company needs people who can move complex work from idea to delivery. Demand is high, and the global talent gap is real.

**You’re a strong fit if:** you’re the person others already turn to when something messy needs to get finished on time and on budget.

**How to stand out:** Certifications help, but results matter more — show how you managed distributed teams, budgets, and shifting priorities without constant meetings.

5. Customer Success Manager — ~$114,000

Your job is to turn customers into long-term advocates and protect revenue through retention and expansion.

**You’re a strong fit if:** you combine product knowledge with genuine relationship skills and problem-solving under pressure.

**How to stand out:** Metrics on retention, expansion revenue, or NPS improvement. Remote CSMs who can run effective check-ins and onboarding without travel are highly valued.

 6. AI Engineer — ~$113,000 (with much higher upside)

This is the wild card. Average numbers understate what strong candidates are actually making — especially at AI-native companies and well-funded startups, where total packages can reach several times this figure.

**You’re a strong fit if:** you have solid foundations in math, statistics, machine learning, and practical experience deploying models or building AI-powered tools. Prompt engineering and data skills are table stakes.

**How to stand out:** Real shipped work > theoretical knowledge. Portfolio projects or production experience will open doors that pure coursework won’t.

 7. Operations Manager — ~$107,000

You’re the person who turns chaos into reliable systems — processes, workflows, people, budgets, and delivery.

**You’re a strong fit if:** you enjoy fixing broken processes and making the business run more smoothly every month.

**How to stand out:** Concrete examples of efficiency gains, cost savings, or scaled operations you led remotely.

 Quick advisor notes

- These are genuine work-from-anywhere roles (not “remote until further notice” or hybrid with office days).

- The common thread across all of them: employers want people who can produce results with minimal hand-holding, communicate clearly in writing, and make the company money or save it time.

- Location flexibility is real, but most companies still prefer candidates who can work overlapping hours with their core team (usually U.S. time zones).

If one of these roles matches your background, the next step is simple: update your resume and LinkedIn to lead with remote-relevant results, then target companies that are actively hiring for these titles on platforms that filter for fully remote work.
