At China’s Robot Olympics, the Finish Line Comes With a Padded Wall and a Stretcher
The robot uprising may have to wait. For now, the machines are still running headfirst into walls—both literal and metaphorical.
That reality was on full display at the second World Humanoid Robot Games, a five-day competition in Beijing where humanoid robots compete in Olympic-style events. The Games kicked off Saturday with preliminary versions of the 100-meter and 400-meter sprints, a 7-on-7 soccer match, and demonstrations of several other events.
In a test run ahead of the competition, a humanoid robot named “Lightning” reportedly ran the 100-meter sprint faster than Usain Bolt’s 2009 world-record time, according to Chinese state media.
But while some robots can reach impressive speeds, stopping remains a considerably harder problem.
A blue padded wall was positioned at the end of the track during Saturday’s races, and several robots slammed into it at full speed. Some lost limbs in the collisions. After each race, a four-person stretcher team entered the track to carry the fallen machines away.
In one particularly dramatic run, a robot briefly caught fire before officials extinguished the flames.
The Games are considerably larger this year, with more than 2,000 robots expected to participate over five days. New events include tug-of-war, weightlifting, tennis, and traditional Chinese martial arts.
A lavish opening ceremony
More than 100 humanoid robots paraded around the track during the opening ceremony as orchestral music echoed through Beijing’s National Speed Skating Oval.
The spectacle followed a soccer match between two teams of seven robots. The game moved at a leisurely pace, with some robots occasionally standing motionless as the ball rolled past them.
One blue-team robot delivered a particularly aggressive kick to an opposing defender, earning a yellow card.
The action then shifted to a slow-paced tennis demonstration between a human and a robot. The human won the point.
Despite the occasional mishap, the scale of the event highlights the growing ambition surrounding humanoid robotics in China.
China’s red-hot humanoid robot industry
Humanoid robotics has developed a reputation for spectacular demonstrations, but the technology still faces significant limitations. Advances in artificial intelligence are improving robots’ ability to perceive and navigate the physical world, yet reliability, dexterity, balance, and real-world autonomy remain difficult engineering challenges.
China and the United States are both investing heavily in the sector as AI capabilities continue to advance.
Unitree, a Chinese robotics company known for its dancing and backflipping humanoids, saw its shares surge as much as 629% during its trading debut on Wednesday before closing 460% higher.
Humanoid robots have also become a source of national pride in China. Beijing is hosting not only the World Humanoid Robot Games but also the 2026 World Robot Conference, underscoring the country’s effort to position itself as a global leader in robotics.
Morgan Stanley analysts have projected that the humanoid robot market could eventually be worth $7.5 trillion by 2050. China’s Unitree and other domestic manufacturers currently occupy a strong position in the emerging market, while US companies remain some distance from deploying humanoids at comparable scale.
The US robotics industry races to catch up
Interest in humanoid robotics is growing rapidly in the United States as investors increasingly view the technology as a potential next frontier for AI.
Attendance at Actuate, a San Francisco conference for robotics developers, has tripled since the event began two years ago. Global robotics startups raised a record $15 billion in 2025 and another $18.8 billion so far this year, according to Crunchbase.
Elon Musk’s Tesla, meanwhile, has tied a proposed $1 trillion compensation package to ambitious targets that include deploying one million Optimus robots.
But the US industry faces a significant hardware challenge. At Actuate, data vendors reportedly outnumbered actual robots, while US companies remain heavily reliant on components manufactured in China and elsewhere.
Last month, the Federal Communications Commission imposed restrictions on new foreign-made “advanced robotic devices,” potentially making it more difficult for US robotics companies to access inexpensive Chinese hardware.
That may give American companies an additional incentive to develop domestic supply chains—but China’s lead is not necessarily permanent.
Unitree’s CEO said this week that the industry’s “ChatGPT moment” could still be a decade away.
For now, China’s robot Olympics offer a useful snapshot of where humanoid robotics actually stands: impressive enough to fill a stadium, but still prone to crashing into the wall at the finish line.
It’s been called the Robot Olympics, but unlike the human games, Team China is collecting almost all the gold.
- April 2025: The first robot half-marathon in Beijing saw frequent crashes and failures, with engineers sprinting alongside to save falling machines.
