Job seekers often spend hours debating resume design: Should it have two columns? A sidebar? Should AI write the entire thing? A new field test from career platform Kickresume suggests that simpler may be better.
In 204 real-world job applications submitted between April and June 2026, the strongest-performing resume was also the least flashy: a human-written resume using a clean, single-column layout.
That version received a positive response 31% of the time, the highest rate among the four formats tested. By comparison, the human-written two-column version received a positive response only 12% of the time.
The results suggest that clarity, readability, and relevance may matter more than elaborate design when a resume has to make it through both applicant tracking systems and human review.
How the Resume Experiment Worked
Kickresume created four versions of the same candidate's resume and sent each version to 51 live job postings, for a total of 204 applications.
The four versions were:
Human-written, single-column
Human-written, two-column
Generic AI-generated
AI-generated and tailored to the job description
The applications were primarily for customer service and sales representative positions across multiple U.S. locations.
Kickresume counted an application as receiving a positive response when an employer requested an interview, phone or video screening, or otherwise invited the candidate to move forward.
Overall, 36 of the 204 applications received a positive response—a response rate of 18%. Of those positive responses, 61% resulted in direct interview requests.
Perhaps more importantly, 30 of the 36 positive responses came from positions that Kickresume considered strong matches for the candidate's experience.
That finding points to a broader lesson: resume-job fit may matter more than simply increasing the number of applications.
The Single-Column Resume Came Out on Top
The clearest difference in the test involved resume layout.
The human-written single-column version generated a 31% positive response rate. The two-column version managed only 12%.
Single-column resumes are also generally easier for applicant tracking systems (ATS) to parse because information follows a straightforward reading order. Columns, sidebars, text boxes, icons, and other design elements can potentially make information harder for automated systems to interpret.
Kickresume CEO and co-founder Peter Duris said clean, single-column layouts dominate the resumes the company sees, partly because they are easier for ATS software to read.
That does not mean every two-column resume will fail. Rather, the study provides evidence that adding visual complexity does not necessarily improve hiring outcomes—and may create unnecessary obstacles.
AI Wasn't the Problem. Generic AI Was.
The experiment produced a more nuanced result for AI-generated resumes.
A generic AI-written resume received a positive response only 10% of the time, making it the weakest performer in the test.
But when that resume was tailored to the specific job description, its response rate increased to 18%.
In other words, tailoring nearly doubled the performance of the AI-generated resume.
The tailored AI resume also outperformed the human-written two-column version.
This distinction matters because the results do not necessarily show that human-written resumes are always better than AI-assisted ones. Instead, they suggest that a generic resume—regardless of who wrote it—is unlikely to be the strongest approach.
Matching a resume to the requirements and language of a particular position appears to be far more useful than simply generating a polished document and submitting it unchanged.
Does Applying Early Actually Matter?
The study also challenged another common assumption: that applicants must apply immediately after a job is posted.
Kickresume found relatively little difference in response rates based on the age of a job listing.
0–2 days old: 19%
3–7 days old: 18%
15+ days old: 17%
The differences were small enough to suggest that obsessing over being the first applicant may not provide a major advantage.
What mattered more was what happened after an application was submitted. Among employers who responded, 78% did so within three days, including 28% who responded on the same day.
After two weeks, responses became much less common. Only 3% of responses arrived 15–20 days after an application was submitted.
For job seekers, that suggests a practical rule: don't abandon an application immediately, but don't wait indefinitely for a response either.
A Tight Job Market Shaped the Results
The experiment also exposed how difficult it was to find suitable openings.
Kickresume initially focused its search on New York City and exhausted its pool of well-matched local positions after roughly 102 applications—about one week into the project.
The team then expanded its search to remote positions, but still encountered relatively few strong matches, even in industries such as customer service and sales that traditionally hire frequently.
That shortage is important when interpreting the resume results. The candidate was not applying randomly to hundreds of comparable positions. The availability of suitable jobs changed throughout the study, which affected when each resume version was submitted.
Why the Results Need a Caveat
The findings are interesting, but they should not be treated as definitive proof that one resume format will outperform another for every job seeker.
This was an observational field test, not a randomized controlled experiment.
The four resume versions were submitted at different times and to different job postings. They were therefore not directly competing for identical openings.
There was also a sequencing issue: the human-written resumes were submitted earlier, when more strong job matches were available. Later versions had access to a smaller pool of suitable positions.
The sample was also relatively small—204 applications—and was concentrated primarily in customer service and sales roles.
Most importantly, the research was conducted by Kickresume, a commercial company whose products include resume-building tools.
Taken together, those limitations mean the percentages should be viewed as signals rather than universal hiring rules.
The Practical Takeaway
Despite those limitations, the experiment points toward a straightforward strategy.
A strong resume does not necessarily need elaborate formatting or fully automated writing. Instead, it should be:
Simple: Use a clean, single-column structure with conventional headings.
Readable: Make important qualifications easy for both ATS software and recruiters to find.
Relevant: Emphasize experience and skills that directly relate to the position.
Tailored: Adjust the resume for individual job descriptions rather than submitting the same generic document everywhere.
Human-reviewed: If AI helps create the resume, edit the result so it accurately reflects your experience and sounds specific to the role.
The biggest lesson from the 204 applications may therefore have less to do with whether a human or AI writes a resume.
Relevance beats novelty.
In this field test, the winning combination was a straightforward layout and a resume that clearly communicated why the candidate was a fit for the job. Fancy design and generic automation did not deliver the same results.
