Why Gen Z Is Ditching the 9-to-5 for the ‘Flex Economy’

Australians are fundamentally rethinking the way they work—and Gen Z is leading the charge away from the traditional 9-to-5 grind.

When journalism graduate Alicha Robertson noticed a massive shift in how news and stories were being consumed, she decided it was time to tell them her own way. Spotting a ripe opportunity in the rapidly expanding world of social media, she took the leap to build a full-time career as an independent content creator.

“I used to work a traditional 9-to-5, but I was eager to really understand the digital landscape,” Robertson shared. “While studying at university, I felt driven to explore journalism through a fresh format—and that’s when I started sharing fashion content online.”

What started as a side hustle alongside her corporate routine steadily evolved over six years into a flourishing full-time business.

Recognizing that the media landscape has shifted dramatically over the past decade, Robertson chose to embrace the risk of striking out on her own—trading a rigid schedule for the freedom to share her unique perspective with the world.
