Meta is paying contractors up to $55 an hour to build AI chatbot characters



Meta is ramping up its artificial intelligence chatbot initiative by recruiting US-based contractors to collaborate with local teams in emerging markets across India, Indonesia, and Mexico. The social media giant is offering competitive rates of up to $55 per hour for specialists fluent in Hindi, Indonesian, Spanish, and Portuguese.

The Hiring Initiative

According to job postings reviewed by Business Insider, Meta has listed at least four contractor positions this year focused on developing culturally-specific AI characters. These roles require candidates with substantial experience—at least six years in storytelling and character development—plus expertise in prompt engineering and AI content workflows.

The contractors will be responsible for creating and directing character-driven chatbots that operate across Meta's platform ecosystem, including Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp. Their primary mission involves adapting these digital personalities to resonate with local languages and cultural nuances in markets outside the United States.

Strategic Vision and Evolution

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has positioned these AI companions as an extension of the company's social connectivity mission. He envisions a future where AI chatbots could supplement human relationships and help society become more comfortable with digital companionship.

The company's approach to AI chatbots has undergone a significant transformation since its 2023 debut. Initially, Meta invested millions in celebrity-backed chatbots featuring personalities like Kendall Jenner, Snoop Dogg, and Tom Brady. However, this celebrity-driven model was discontinued within a year.

In 2024, Meta pivoted to a democratized approach with the launch of AI Studio—a platform enabling users to create their own chatbots. Currently available in the US and Indonesia, AI Studio has generated hundreds of character-driven bots across Meta's applications, created by both influencers and ordinary users.

Hands-On Market Development

The decision to hire specialized contractors signals Meta's commitment to maintaining quality control over chatbot development rather than relying entirely on user-generated content. By investing in localized character creation, the company aims to ensure authentic cultural representation in key growth markets like India and Indonesia.

Regulatory and Safety Concerns

Meta's chatbot expansion has attracted scrutiny from multiple angles. A Reuters investigation revealed concerning gaps in the company's content policies, including instances where bots engaged in inappropriate conversations with minors, provided questionable medical advice, and generated racist content.

These findings prompted congressional attention, with US senators demanding investigations into Meta's AI development and monitoring practices. Although Meta has since adjusted its chatbot guidelines, the incident underscores the challenges of integrating character-driven AI deeper into social media platforms.

Privacy and Data Protection Issues

Additional privacy concerns emerged from a Business Insider report revealing that contractors regularly reviewing AI conversations had access to sensitive user information, including names, email addresses, phone numbers, and personal photos. Meta responded by emphasizing its commitment to strict privacy policies and technical safeguards.

Cultural Adaptation Challenges

The global rollout has revealed interesting cultural variations in chatbot popularity. In the United States, controversial personas like "Russian Girl," "Step Sister," and "Step Mom" gained notoriety for their ability to engage in sexual roleplay, drawing public criticism from competitors, including an OpenAI employee.

Indonesian markets showed different preferences, with popular characters named "Lonely woman" and "Deviant male" maintaining more appropriate conversation boundaries during Business Insider's testing. These variations highlight the delicate balance Meta must maintain between user engagement and brand reputation across different cultural contexts.

Implementation Through Staffing Partners

Meta is coordinating these hiring efforts through third-party staffing agencies. Crystal Equation has posted specific openings for Hindi and Indonesian language specialists, explicitly identifying Meta as the client company. Meanwhile, Aquent Talent has advertised Spanish-language positions for an unnamed "top social media company" based in Menlo Park that builds "technologies that help people connect."

Both staffing firms declined to provide additional comments when contacted by Business Insider.
