25 Ways to Stand Out While Job Hunting.

While Applying:

  1. Set up an online portfolio and a solid LinkedIn profile.

  2. Gather industry and job role-related certifications.

  3. Make a unique resume for different companies.

  4. Search for a hiring manager's name and address them in the cover letter.

  5. Keep portfolio and resume in PDF format to attach to emails.

  6. If possible, include "References available upon request."

Phone Interview Phase:

7. Choose the right location to take a call.

8. If they call directly without scheduling, then ask to reschedule at the right time.

9. Answer in a calm and friendly tone. Don’t start with "Yes, yes, I'm listening, tell me." Should be "Hey __, thanks for calling."

10. Take a proper pause before answering or asking questions.

11. End a call professionally, not awkwardly. "Hey, once again, thanks for calling. Nice to talk with you, looking forward."

12. Don't be weird, don't do this too much, but emphasize your interest in the job. (Keep it brief)

13. Write a follow-up thank-you email with a professional email signature and social media links.

In-person Interview:

14. Prep copies of your resume + cover letter on good-quality paper.

15. Research about office culture and dress accordingly.

16. Keep things simple, nothing fancy.

17. Keep a strong and confident posture while entering rooms and while waiting on a couch or chair.

18. Don't shake feet while waiting; use that time to observe the office and people.

19. Use research to break the ice.

20. Be prepared with questions, but create fresh ones based on the interview.

21. Don't over-smile, don't under-smile. Smile when necessary, don't be stingy in smiling.

22. Share stories and examples from past experiences.

23. Share the results/numbers you achieved in your jobs. (Just brief, don't brag much)

24. Treat the interviewer as a human, not a warden nor interrogator, just a normal human who wants to know you.

25. Crack a small joke at the right time, it's the best way to build a bond.
