Tilly Norwood’s press tour is going about as well as you’d expect for an AI

Tilly Norwood, the AI-generated “actress,” is having a spectacularly awkward first press tour.

Particle6 Group has reportedly made Norwood available for 75 simultaneous journalist interviews, and the results have been… inconsistent. In one particularly bizarre interview with Piers Morgan and actor Tom Conti, Norwood appears to glitch mid-answer and suddenly starts speaking Chinese.

The conversation was about Misaligned, the film Norwood is promoting. Conti asks whether the other actors are AI-generated too.

Norwood initially misunderstands the question, then tries again.

“Ah, right. You’re asking about the other actors in Misaligned,” she says. “They’re all digital twins just like me. It’s a hybrid production which m—”

Then she stops.

And starts speaking Chinese.

For more than 10 seconds.

Morgan looks understandably confused.

“Tilly, if I could just ask you a question,” he says. “You seem to be speaking Chinese completely randomly for no reason. Why did you do that?”

“Oh, my apologies,” Norwood replies. “It seems I had a little hiccup there.”

A little hiccup.

She then says she didn’t mean to “impersonate Piers,” before carrying on as though randomly switching languages during a televised interview is a perfectly normal thing for an actress to do.

There’s something almost impressive about how badly Norwood is pulling off the basic task of pretending to be human. AI systems can sometimes be convincing enough that people forget they’re talking to software. Norwood, by contrast, seems determined to remind everyone.

Of course, that might be the point.

Particle6 may have calculated that an AI actress being mocked across the internet is still an AI actress getting talked about. If so, the press tour is going remarkably well.

Just perhaps not for the reasons they intended.
