Every few months I hear from someone in my community looking for career advice. Typically, these folks are recently out of school or looking to switch into a data science or visualization role. “How’d you do it?” they ask. “Should I get a master’s? What books should I read?” I chuckle. If only.

1) Find something you like and do lots of it.

2) Try to make some of your work public.

3) Even when you have a job, don’t quit doing #1 and #2.

4) Be your own best critic.

5) If what you want doesn’t exist, make it yourself.

6) If you want help from someone, make it easy for them.

7) Don’t make excuses when you can just get sh*t did.
